Shhhh…. its a secret shop. But I’ll do you a favor and let you in on the secret!
If you’re into small business shopping and staying local (and even if you’re not), you will want to know about this hidden gem in SE Portland. Johan is ran by owner Laura who is a creative, unique minimalist. Her passion for her brick and mortar shop is evident and coming into the shop you immediately feel like her long time friend, what’s not to love?!
I personally interned with Laura for a couple months and through it was able to experience her love for all things “in” and “cool”. I can’t say enough good things about the shop and how unique it makes you feel when you step in through the door and take a look at all of the eye catching products she has available.
I had the privilege to ask Laura a few questions about her shop, her style and some advice for new shop owners. Check it out below:
1. What has been your favorite part of opening you’re own brick and mortar shop?
There are so many things I’ve loved about opening my own shop! All of it is a total dream, from having full creative control, to going on buying trips to New York and supporting small-scale makers. My absolute favorite part though, and the part has been the most surprising, is the community that is building around Johan. I love that Johan has become a magnet for like-minded people from all over the world, people that want their lives to be filled with #onlygreatthings.
2. What are your 3 favorite products you are selling at Johan?
I am completely obsessed with B Sides Jeans from Brooklyn-based design studio Where I Was From. The patchwork is gorgeous and the jeans fit like a dream! Also really into the clean lines of the Nina Z Niko clogs right now. And of course, anything from Midnight Collective consistently tops my list of faves.
3. What are your “go to” staple items in your wardrobe for this spring?
If you know me, you know I’m always in mules or sneakers. I have some really cute black mules from Intentionally __________ coming in for spring, and I have a feeling I will be living in them! Also will probably be wearing denim and some sort of linen top at all times. I love easy pieces that I don’t have to think too much about.
4. Any quick helpful advice to anyone wanting to open their own local shop?
Do your research! See where there is a real gap in the market. When you start a business, you are doing something that will make you happy and fulfill your dreams, but ultimately the demand must be there for it to be successful.
5. Who do you look up to for inspiration in your own style and inspiration for your shop?
I have a lot of respect for stylist Michele Andrews (@mishnar). She is one of those people that seems to be living a little bit in the future, always one step ahead of everyone else.
If you’re in the area make sure to make it your next stop while out shopping and if you’re not in the area, place Johan on your to do list when you come visit Portland!
shop only great things at Johan!
